How to Multistream Without Wrecking Your Frame Rate
Why multistreaming hits your frame rate at all
Multistreaming โ going live to Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok (once you're unlocked) at the same time โ sounds like a free win. Same stream, more rooms. The problem is what's actually happening under the hood on your machine.
When you multistream locally (OBS with a multi-RTMP plugin, for example), your computer isn't just sending one video feed out โ depending on your setup, it can be encoding and pushing a separate outgoing stream to each destination, on top of rendering your scene, running your capture sources, and everything else open on your PC or phone. That's the same hardware doing more work for the same result, and frame rate is usually the first thing that gives.
This is the mismatch a lot of new streamers hit without knowing it: gear that was fine for one platform suddenly isn't fine for three, and nobody warned them multistreaming has a hardware cost before they turned it on.
The two ways multistreaming actually works
Before you touch a single setting, it helps to know there are two fundamentally different approaches โ and they have very different costs to your machine.
- Local multi-output (OBS + a multi-RTMP plugin, or OBS 30's built-in additional stream outputs): your computer encodes and uploads to each platform directly. Good encoders can share one encode across outputs to save some CPU/GPU load, but your upload bandwidth is still split across every destination โ you generally want upload speed at least 1.5x your total combined bitrate to leave headroom.
- Cloud restreaming (Restream, Castr, and similar): you send ONE stream to their servers, and their infrastructure does the encoding and redistribution to every platform. This is dramatically lighter on your CPU/GPU and your home upload speed, at the cost of a small amount of added latency and a recurring subscription past the free tier's limits.
If you're on modest hardware: go cloud first
If you're streaming from a laptop, an older desktop, or anything without a dedicated hardware encoder, cloud restreaming is the easier fix, not a downgrade. You're trading a small amount of latency for keeping your frame rate intact โ that's almost always the right trade if you're not running a dedicated encoding rig.
Most cloud tools have a free tier that covers 2-3 destinations, which is plenty when you're starting out. Save the local multi-RTMP route for later, once you actually have hardware headroom to spare.

If you do want to multistream locally in OBS, these are the levers that matter most, in order of impact:
- Use hardware encoding, not x264. NVENC (NVIDIA), AMF (AMD), or Quick Sync (Intel) offload encoding onto a dedicated chip instead of competing with your CPU for cycles โ this is the single biggest fix for encoder overload warnings in OBS.
- Drop resolution and frame rate before you drop anything else. 1080p60 is demanding even for a single destination; multistreaming makes it worse. Stepping down to 1080p30 or 720p60 often solves dropped-frame issues instantly with a smaller quality hit than most viewers actually notice.
- Set your bitrate to roughly 70-80% of your tested upload speed, not your advertised speed โ run a real speed test, don't trust what your ISP promised you.
- Close everything you don't need live: Discord overlays, Chrome tabs, background capture software. Every one of those is stealing CPU cycles from your encode.
- Prefer Game Capture or a dedicated capture source over Display Capture where possible โ it's meaningfully lighter on your system.
A quick gut-check before you go live
Test one platform alone first. If you're already seeing dropped frames or an "encoding overloaded" warning streaming to just Twitch, adding YouTube and TikTok on top of that local encode isn't going to fix itself โ it's cloud restreaming or a settings drop, full stop.
And if you're not sure which mistake you're making, it's almost always one of two things: trying to local-multistream on hardware that can't spare the headroom, or chasing 1080p60 across every platform when 720p60 (or 1080p30) would look nearly identical to your viewers and cost you nothing in stability.
Multistreaming isn't the growth lever people think it is โ yet
Here's the part that's easy to miss while you're deep in encoder settings: multistreaming puts the same content in more places, but it doesn't actually solve discovery on any one of them. A stream with 3 viewers on Twitch and 2 on YouTube at the same time is still a small stream, split two ways instead of stacked in one place.
The bigger unlock for small streamers is usually collaborating with other streamers around your size โ new audiences see you because someone else already trusts you, not because you technically broadcast to more platforms at once.
